LA SOURCE A young girl entirely nude stands facing us. Her right arm, bent over her head, holds an earthen vase poised on her left shoulder, the mouth of which rests on her left hand as the water pours from it into a pool at her feet. Behind is a rock.

Charles Blanc considered this the most beautiful figure that had ever been painted by the French School.

  • When I am finishing a picture, I hold some God-made object up to it – a rock, a flower, the branch of a tree or my hand – as a final test. If the painting stands up beside a thing man cannot make, the painting is authentic. If there’s a clash between the two, it’s bad art. Marc Chagall
The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us—fostering creativity, goodness, and beauty. The arts help us express our values, build bridges between cultures, and bring us together regardless of ethnicity, religion, or age. When times are tough, art is salve for the ache.
